10 Commandments for Athletes From PhilippiansSample

10 Commandments for Athletes From Philippians

DAY 9 OF 10

Christian Athlete, Have Heavenly Metrics

"Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things" (Philippians 4:8 ESV).

Our thought life shapes our spiritual life. It's probably why Paul challenges us to fill our minds with what’s true, pure, lovely, and praiseworthy. This is similar to the devotional on joy from a few days ago. It's easy for our circumstances in sport to drive how we feel, think and act. It’s easy to dwell on mistakes, rankings, or doubts—especially when those around us are piling on as well. The natural reflex of our minds is to go negative when circumstances look bleak. But what if we trained our thoughts like we train our bodies? That's exactly what Paul is telling us to do: train our minds.

One of the ways we do that is by reflecting on heavenly metrics instead of just measuring success by earthly scoreboards. Heavenly metrics measure success by faithfulness, not fame. This means asking ourselves questions like: Did I honor God with my effort? Did I love people well? Did I stay true to my values?

When our thoughts dwell on what’s excellent and eternal, our heart follows. So, curate your inner playlist—choose gratitude over envy, hope over fear, humility over pride. The mind fixed on Christ becomes a life that reflects Him.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What thoughts tend to dominate your mind during competition?
  2. How can you fill your mind with what is “excellent and praiseworthy”?

Prayer to Consider:
Jesus, renew my mind. I want to meditate on things that are pleasing to You but I confess that my headspace often drifts towards lesser things. Help me focus on truth, beauty, and what honors You most. For your glory, my joy, and the good of others. Amen.

About this Plan

10 Commandments for Athletes From Philippians

If we’re trying to integrate faith and sport using Paul’s letter to the Philippians, where do we turn? Probably Philippians 4:13. It’s one of the best (though often misused) verses for athletes. But the rest of the letter offers much to anyone involved in sports. Paul writes like a coach, calling his team to a high standard, getting right to the point—understandable since he’s writing from prison. Whether you call them commands, principles, or coaching points, Paul lays out a map for faithful living. This 10-day devotional journeys through 10 commands from Paul’s Philippian playbook.
