Gift of Heaven: A Christmas Devotional Series

DAY 6 OF 9

DAY 6: God With Us in Our Weakness – Hearing His Voice

One of the striking themes in the Christmas story is how personally and powerfully God speaks to people in their weakness.

Joseph wasn’t a king or priest. He was a working man. Faithful, kind, but deeply conflicted. His world had just been upended by Mary’s news. And yet, in his confusion and heartbreak, God speaks. Not through thunder or fire, but in a dream.

This quiet, supernatural guidance was a pattern. Dreams and angelic visions shaped the course of Jesus’ earliest days. Joseph is warned to flee Herod. The Magi are redirected. God moves not through grand declarations from palaces, but through whispered words to everyday people.

This tells us something vital: the Holy Spirit speaks the language of our weakness. He doesn’t wait for us to be strong, certain, or stable. He meets us in the night watches, in the wrestling, in the weariness, and He speaks.

Dreams and visions may seem mysterious, but they are consistent with how God led His people throughout Scripture. And today, He still leads through His Word, by His Spirit, and sometimes through dreams, impressions, and godly counsel.

The real question is not can God speak to us, but are we open to hear Him?

In your uncertainty, God is not silent. In your vulnerability, He is not distant. You may feel like Joseph, unsure of what to do next, but take heart. Emmanuel means God with us. Not just in our triumphs, but in our questions.

Reflection Questions

  1. Are you open to hearing from God in new or unexpected ways this Christmas?
  2. What would it look like for you to pause and listen in the silence?
  3. Is there a decision or situation where you need God’s wisdom and direction?
