Imagine a crew working to build a beautiful cathedral—one group of workers using trucks to transport the large stones, machines to cut the stone, and cranes to lift them in place, and another group using only hand tools. Is one side of the cathedral going to be stronger than the other, or prettier? No—but if one group starts an argument about how their method is better, the work will stop and the cathedral will never be built.

This is the kind of disunity Paul wrote about. One group of Christians realized the meat sold in the market was the same that had been sacrificed to pagan gods and didn’t want to eat it. Another group understood that God declared all foods acceptable to eat. More than that, he doesn’t want either group condemning the other.

Like the crews building the cathedral, we’re working for the same purpose: to introduce people to Jesus and together fully follow him. We make decisions about what we watch, read, drink, or wear. If one person wears a jacket and tie to church and someone else wears shorts, we judge neither. If one family watches a show that another family doesn’t, and the second family is invited over for Friday movie night, pick something everyone can enjoy—and build that relationship along the way.

In unity we’ll build God’s church, bring him glory, and invite others to join us.
