Signal Fire - 1 Thessalonians

DAY 23 OF 29

Paul gives us this picture: “the Lord himself will come down from heaven… and the dead in Christ will rise first.” I love how it says “the Lord himself.” Not an angel, not a messenger—Jesus. The same Savior who walked with His friends, touched the untouchable, calmed storms, and carried the cross will personally return for His people. He’s not sending someone in His place—He’s coming Himself. That changes how we see the future. We don’t have to wonder if we’ll be overlooked or forgotten. He’s coming back for us.

Then Paul reminds us: “we will be with the Lord forever.” Forever—not for a season, not until something else interrupts, but forever. That’s the anchor. Our eternity is settled in Him. And because of that, Paul says, “encourage one another with these words.” Hope isn’t just something we hold quietly inside—it’s something we’re called to share out loud. We get to remind each other: Jesus is coming, the story isn’t over, and forever with Him is ahead.

Who needs to hear that kind of encouragement today? Send a text, make a call, or speak it face-to-face. Remind someone in your life that they are not forgotten—Jesus Himself is coming again, and our forever with Him is secure.

  1. How does the promise that “the Lord himself will come down” change the way you view the future?
  2. What comes to mind when you hear the phrase, “we will be with the Lord forever”? How does that truth bring you comfort right now?
  3. Paul says to “encourage one another with these words.” Who in your life could use this reminder of hope today, and how can you share it with them?
  4. In what ways does living with eternity in view shape the choices you make in the present?

About this Plan

Signal Fire - 1 Thessalonians

"Signal Fire" is a devotional through 1 Thessalonians, showing how our lives are meant to shine as indicators of God’s love. Like a fire seen from a distance, faith that is lived out brings direction, warmth, and hope. Paul celebrates the Thessalonians because their faith, love, and endurance became a signal fire to others, spreading well beyond their city. This devotional invites us to tend the flame God has placed in us, so our everyday lives point people to Jesus and burn brightly with the hope of His return.
