Get Happy: Break the Pattern That's Breaking YouSample

Joy Isn’t Found Where You Think
If happiness came from success or comfort, modern people should be overflowing with joy. Yet Scripture points to a different source.
“Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.” – Psalm 1:1–2 NIV
That picture may surprise you. The "blessed" – the deeply happy – person is not chasing popularity, wealth, or comfort. Instead, it is those who have slowed down enough to meditate on God’s Word and let it guide their life.
True happiness grows when our roots reach into something stable and alive rather than into the shifting approval of culture. But this is very hard to do in a world filled with so much noise.
We are constantly told what will make life better: more success, more adventure, more comfort. Social media scrolls whisper that others are happier. Advertisers promise satisfaction if we buy one more thing. Yet even when you “arrive”, you still feel dry and restless.
A big part of our problem as modern-day Christians is distraction, perhaps exacerbated by lack of a daily focus point. Other faith traditions build visible rhythms of prayer into daily life… many Indian homes have a prayer room; many Muslims have a prayer rug to kneel and pray. But most Christian homes have no physical place or reminder to seek God.
Instead, many of our spaces are filled with screens and constant sound. The car radio is on, the TV hums, sports and shows keep us busy. None of this is evil, but it leaves little room for stillness with God.
Psalm 1 gives a different vision. Check the analogy it puts forward for the blessed person in the next verse:
“That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.” – Psalm 1:3 NIV
The tree in this psalm does not hurry or strive; it thrives because its roots go deep into living water. We can also begin to live that way by carving out quiet space for prayer and Scripture.
This could be a single chair, a quiet corner in the house, or just a few undistracted minutes set aside each and every day. Even simple behaviors like opening the Bible in the morning before you check your phone, or taking time to sit in silence to let your mind rest on God’s truth at a set time each day.
At first it may feel awkward; we’re so used to movement and noise. But as you slow down, peace grows and gratitude starts to take root. God’s Word can then begin to shape how you see yourself and the world around you. And, over time, joy rises – not from more excitement but from deeper connection to Him.
This can be the beginning of the larger journey to break free from “the pattern of this world” that Paul describes in Romans 12:2. Learning to just be still and to find your footing in God’s Word is a great beginning.
Once you start with that, there is much more to explore about how you can “be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (also Romans 12:2) and your life reshaped for lasting happiness...all after you slow down, draw on God's Word and start to break free from the pattern of this world.
Take Time to Reflect
- Where could you create space — even a few minutes — for prayer and reflection this week?
- What distractions might you turn off to listen for God’s voice?
- How might delighting in God’s Word change the way you measure happiness?
