BibleProject | Finding God in the WildernessSample

Entering into Sabbath Rest
Today’s Scripture reading is an invitation to experience the true rest that comes from trusting in God. Through his death and resurrection, Jesus opens up a way for us to enter a future garden-land of rest.
Although we can begin to experience this rest today, we’re still in the wilderness, awaiting the fullness of rest that will come with Jesus’ return and restoration of our world. While we wait for this hope to be fulfilled, we’re faced with a daily choice—the same choice the ancient Israelites faced—to either trust God or grumble and reject him.
The book of Hebrews picks up on the relationship between followers of Jesus and ancient Israelites, with both groups traveling through deserts on their way to God’s promised world. Quoting from Psalm 95:7-11, the author reminds us that many Israelites, including Moses, never entered the restfulness of this garden-land because they hardened their hearts and refused to trust God (Heb. 3:7-11, 15-19; see Num. 13-14, 20:1-13).
Using this example as a warning, the author of Hebrews challenges everyone still on the journey to trust God and listen to his instructions with soft hearts. Trusting in God drives out fear and generates mercy so that we can embrace God’s way of justice and love and enter into his true Sabbath rest.
Reflection Question:
- What lessons can we draw from Israel’s journey in the wilderness to help us enter the deep, true rest that God offers?
About this Plan

Why do people end up in the wilderness? The answer isn’t as simple as you might think. In this reading plan, we invite you to consider the biblical theme of the wilderness—a barren wasteland that becomes a place of testing, preparation, and restoration.
