BibleProject | One Story That Leads to JesusSample

For a few dazzling moments, Peter, James, and John glimpse Jesus in the fullness of his glory. They find themselves on a high mountain with Moses and Elijah, both of whom had life-changing mountaintop encounters with God’s glory. But the disciples misunderstand the moment.
Peter thinks the Kingdom of God is coming into power now, and he wants to make this experience of glory permanent by building houses. Jesus explains, again, that he must first suffer and be killed, and then rise from the dead. The greater glory is yet to come. But the disciples can’t wrap their heads around this. They’ve seen the glory, so why does Jesus have to suffer?
Notice the structure of Mark 9:30-36 and 10:32-45. Jesus explains for a second and third time that he must die and rise from the dead. And how do the disciples respond? In both passages, they fight over status, seeking their own exaltation rather than following the model of Jesus’ humility. Again and again, they want glory without suffering. Jesus is gentle with them as he explains that in his Kingdom, true greatness is found in humble service to others—not in power or prestige.
Greatness and glory are also not found in possessions. In the second half of today’s reading, Jesus encounters a wealthy young man. Like the disciples, he has his eyes fixed on things of this world instead of the Kingdom of God. Watch today’s video for Jesus’ teaching on possessions. In these two stories, Jesus reveals that Kingdom values include generosity and sacrifice, not the pursuit of power, prestige, or possessions.
Reflection Questions
Meditate on Mark 9:21-25. What do you notice about the father’s interactions with Jesus? How does Jesus respond to his struggling faith?
Today’s video is about Jesus’ teachings on wealth. Pay attention to the rich young man in Mark 10:17-22. How does his interaction with Jesus relate to other things Jesus says about money?
