Flavoring Your Words

“Salty” isn’t exactly a word that springs to mind when you think of a compliment. It’s more likely to conjure up images of grumpy internet trolls. So when Paul tells us to “season our conversations with salt” (Colossians 4:6), you might be forgiven for raising an eyebrow.

Tim Mackie, co-founder of the Bible Project, highlights seven nuances of the Biblical salt metaphor that have been suggested across history.

First, salt gives flavor. Salt is a universal taste-enhancer, adding depth and richness to food.

Secondly, salt preserves. A guardian against infection and decay, salt is a protective agent, conserving foods and prolonging life.

Thirdly, salt evokes God’s covenant. In the Hebrew scriptures, it was used to symbolize Yahweh’s enduring promises to His people.

Fourthly, salt signifies purity. With its glistening crystals, it carries a sense of pristine incorruptibility.

Friendship is fifth. “Sharing salt” was used as an ancient shorthand for having food together; a sign of trust and intimacy.

Sixth, salt brings peace. Jesus Himself linked salt with peace, saying this: “Have salt amongst yourselves, and be at peace with each other” (Mark 9:50).

And finally, salt suggests divine favor. The ancient Greeks believed that salt appeased the gods. Consequently, it carried cultural associations with supernatural blessing.

If salt is a symbol of God’s covenant, then our speech should be peppered with a reflection of His heart. If salt speaks of purity, preservation, and flavor-enhancement, then our language should be captivating, wholesome, and uplifting, protecting our relationships from the rot of negativity. If salt is linked with hospitality and peace, our words should be welcoming and kind. What application connects most with you?

Today, don’t be salty, but sprinkle salt into your conversations. Your words can be the God-seasoning that brings joy, connection, and flavor into the lives of those around you.

Prayer

Everlasting Father, may my words carry the sweetness of Your promises and the strength of Your truth. Let every conversation I hold be a spark of Your peace, a taste of Your goodness. Protect my tongue from bitterness and shape it to be an instrument of life. May my speech draw others closer to Your everlasting love.
