Hebrews

DAY 9 OF 22

The High Priest was the central figure in the temple service and the mediator between God and the people of Israel. On the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur), he entered the Most Holy Place to offer atoning sacrifices for the sins of the people. Through sacrifices and prayers, he sought forgiveness and restored the relationship between God and the people. His role as mediator was crucial for maintaining the covenant and the purity of the people before God.

The author of Hebrews explains to his readers that there is now a new, greater, and better High Priest: Jesus. Because Jesus was human, He knows exactly what it is like to live as a human and can understand us. But Jesus is not just a High Priest; He is a priest in the order of Melchizedek. Melchizedek is mentioned in the Old Testament as king of Salem and priest of the Most High God (Genesis 14:18-20). His unique role as both king and priest is remarkable, as these offices were normally separate in the Old Testament.

Jesus is both priest and king, appointed by God Himself, which makes Him superior to the “ordinary” high priests. Through His suffering, He has opened the way to God for us once and for all. Jesus is King, Priest, and Prophet.
