In Hebrews 12:12, we find the main reason the writer is writing this letter: he wants to encourage his readers not to give up in their faith. After all the discussion about Jesus’ greatness, power, goodness, and love, they are now called to remain steadfast. Even their current suffering is not a sign that Jesus has abandoned them. Rather, it serves their spiritual growth. Jesus is at work in their lives, even when they don’t understand everything.
The writer calls them to pursue peace and to grow in holiness—becoming more and more like Jesus. This is not just about avoiding sin, but also about consciously choosing to live a holy and righteous life. They are also reminded to keep their ultimate goal in mind: the heavenly Jerusalem, the place where they will one day experience perfect fellowship with God.
The writer points out how seriously God took the disregard of His Word when He spoke to the Israelites on Mount Sinai. How much more serious will it be if we neglect the Word of the new covenant? Now God speaks from heaven, and His voice shakes not only the earth, but the entire cosmos.
Something to think about
- What helps you hold on to your faith during difficult times?
- How can you actively promote peace and holiness in your life to become more like Jesus?
- Is there a “root of bitterness” in your life?
Bring all of this to Jesus—the author and perfecter of your faith.
