30 Days of Praying for Children and FamiliesSample

The biblical idea of compassion is rooted in God’s character, who is repeatedly described as “The God of compassion and mercy! I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness.” (Exodus 34:6, NIV)
Compassion here reflects a depth of feeling, love, and commitment (the word in Hebrew is the same as for ‘womb’). It is one of the qualities in God that means that, despite everything, he does not give up on his people. Compassion is costly.
In the New Testament, Jesus tells his disciples to ‘be compassionate, just as your Father is compassionate.’ (Luke 6:36, NLT)
This follows the story of the Good Samaritan, who upends societal expectations and, at remarkable personal cost, extends care and grace to meet the needs of someone he didn’t even know. You have received it, says Jesus, now live it out. No wonder compassion is such a powerful sign of the Kingdom.
Prayer
As you switch the kettle on and wait for the water to boil, use this brief moment in your day to pause and pray.
Bring to mind the children and young people entering the care system this year, finding themselves in an unfamiliar home, an unfamiliar kitchen with unfamiliar food and utensils.
Pray for every child and young person in care, that they find people who will curate conversation, connection, and sharing: people who will listen deeply, patiently, and compassionately.
Pray for carers and support networks as they reach out in compassion, pray that they will first be filled with the love and compassion of God for the children and young people they are supporting.
