Devotions on F.I.R.E. Year Two

DAY 42 OF 365

Nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will (Matthew 26:39 NKJV).

Are you freely embracing God's guidance in your life?

In the pages of Matthew 26, we find Jesus navigating the depths of prayer, offering us insights that transcend time. Three key concepts emerge from His three prayers.

  1. First, we witness the prayerful surrender to God's will (Matthew 26:36–40). Jesus pleads, "O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will" (Matthew 26:39 NKJV). The Savior exemplifies submission to the Father's will over His own.
  2. The second concept cautions us to pray lest we yield to temptation. Jesus implores, "Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak" (Matthew 26:41 NKJV). A prayer-driven life becomes our shield against the snares set by the adversary.
  3. Interestingly, the third point echoes the first: Prayerfully surrender to God's will (Matthew 26:42–46). In the face of impending death, Jesus utters another prayer, declaring, "O My Father, if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done" (Matthew 26:42 NKJV).

As you journey through the tempests of life, may your prayers be like finely tuned sails, adjusting to the guiding will of our heavenly Father.

Employment Point: Pray while submitting to God’s will to overcome temptation.

About this Plan

Devotions on F.I.R.E. Year Two

Devotions on F.I.R.E. journeys through the Bible in one year. Each day includes a devotion based on Dr. Burge’s F.I.R.E. method of Bible Study. F.I.R.E. stands for Familiarity, Interpretation, Relationship, and Employment. The F.I.R.E. method and the daily devotions help readers remember and apply what they read as they fuel the fire in their hearts for God’s Word—adapted from the book Devotions on F.I.R.E. Year Two, by Dr. Ken J. Burge, Sr.
