Causin' a Stir: Thirst Quenching Essentials for Satisfying Your SoulSample

DAY 2: Cracked Cisterns
God’s creativity shines through water. Simple, yet essential. Covering 70% of the earth, making up 60% of our bodies, and required for every function of life, water determines whether we live or die. No wonder it became one of God’s favorite illustrations for Himself.
“With You is the fountain of life…” —Psalm 36:9 NIV
“Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters…” —Isaiah 55:1 NIV
Water is life.
But here’s my confession: I prefer coffee and soda. I reach for what’s flavored, fizzy, or fun—even though it can’t hydrate me. I know better, but I do it anyway. And I’m not the first.
Jeremiah pointed out the same human habit centuries ago. Instead of going to the fountain of living water, people built cisterns—holes dug into the ground to collect rainwater. It seemed convenient. Everyone did it. But the water didn’t last. Over time, those cisterns leaked, reeked, and bred worms. Still, they kept drinking.
Sound familiar? We dig our own “cisterns” all the time. Career success. A relationship. Financial security. Family. Even ministry. Good things, yes—but incapable of quenching the thirst deep inside. Over time, our substitutes crack and leave us emptier than before.
We keep filling our cup, but it leaves us thirsty still.
That’s why God says cistern-chasing is not only useless—it’s offensive. He’s the Living Water. He’s what our souls are aching for.
The good news? His water doesn’t come with conditions.
“To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life.” —Revelation 21:6 ESV
Maybe you’ve been sipping from the wrong source. Maybe your soul feels wormy, stale, or parched. But God offers something better—Himself. And His supply never runs dry.
DRINK DEEP
Identify the “cistern” you’ve been digging—what you’ve relied on to bring satisfaction apart from God. Ask Him to help you stop scooping from broken wells and to quench your thirst with living water today.
