Know Jesus, Be TransformedSample

Hungry No More
The crowds were hungry, both literally and figuratively. They had gathered to hear Jesus speak, even if it meant they had to go for long periods of time without food. We can estimate there were about 20,000 people, including women and children. The disciples realized the people needed to eat something. But it was impossible to find food for them at such short notice. They also didn’t have enough money to purchase food for the large group. Strangely enough, Andrew found a little boy with his lunch and brought him to Jesus.
To their surprise, the disciples watched Jesus multiply the five loaves and two fish, over and over again, till thousands of people had their stomachs full. And there were leftovers! The twelve disciples and the little boy had the privilege of being active participants in this remarkable miracle. Jesus invited them to be directly involved in His work.
The feeding of the 5,000 is the only miracle included in all four Gospels. It was an exceptional miracle that pointed to the truth that Jesus is not just our Provider but also our Provision. By highlighting the all-sufficiency of Jesus, this sign pointed to the identity of Jesus as the Bread of Life.
While the story highlights Jesus’ divine nature, it also underscores the importance of community in the Kingdom of God. Indeed, it is Jesus who supplies our individual needs. But Jesus expects us to depend on each other as we, together, rely on His limitless supply of heavenly resources.
Our calling to follow Jesus includes the responsibility and privilege of being a conduit of miracles in the lives of other believers. Together, our shared miracles bring glory to Him and display His awesome power.
Respond
- What opportunities to display Christ’s power in your community do you overlook because you only see a lack of resources?
- What is your biggest need right now? Have you placed it in the hands of Jesus?
