Trusting God in the Unknown: A 5-Day Encouragement for Special Needs Moms

DAY 3 OF 5

Day 3: Unknown Rhythm

Dear Warrior Mom,

I see moms with children who have unique abilities as “Warrior Moms.” Even though we face uncertainties at different stages in our lives, we keep moving forward. We demonstrate strength we didn’t even realize we had, which comes from the Lord God Himself.

Isaiah 40:31 says, “But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint” (NLT).

I wondered, “What does a new normal look like?” It took time, effort, and faith in God to establish our new normal (also known as a family rhythm) in our household.

My husband and I sat down together to discuss ideas, thoughts, and feelings, creating a space to support each other. What will our new family rhythm look like? What consistent services does our daughter need? Who will be part of our daughter's healthcare team? Who will be the primary caregiver while the other parent works outside the home?

There was a lot to consider and many unknowns about how these changes might impact our family. Over the years, I’ve learned that going back to the drawing board happens more often than you’d think, depending on how life unfolds.

We shifted from a two-income household to a one-income household. I transitioned from being a working mom to a full-time stay-at-home mom, which was a significant change.

My husband needed to find jobs that offered a certain income and health benefits to help cover the costs of the services our daughter required. As a result, he took jobs that weren’t his passion but paid well. Some days, if not most, he worked in a field that made him unhappy, but he chose to do it to support our family.

The enemy used some of our experiences to create a negative soundtrack in our minds and tried to divide us, but we brought it to God.

1 Peter 5:8-9 (NLT) says, “Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith. Remember that your family of believers all over the world is going through the same kind of suffering you are.”

According to Psychology Today, surveys show that the divorce rate among families with children who have unique abilities is 87%. This high percentage breaks my heart.

My husband and I knew we needed to see the situation differently. God tells us, “Don’t copy the behaviors and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and perfect.” Romans 12:2 (NVI)

I started reading a book titled “The Confident Woman” by Joyce Meyer, which helped me realize that motherhood at home is a form of ministry. It showed me I still have value even if I don’t bring home a full-time income.

I learned how to be a homemaker and decided to create a nurturing, loving home. Proverbs 31:27a says, “She watches over the affairs of her household.”

Your role as a wife, mom, and caregiver is vital. You are valued and loved by God. Reading the Word daily equips you with the armor of God, empowering you to face life’s challenges with strength and to find joy even in the midst of challenges.

Deuteronomy 31:8 (NLT) says, “Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you.”

Even on days when you feel alone, you are never truly alone. You’ve got this, mama, and God is right there walking beside and ahead of you!

Pray that you can surrender your plans and embrace your new rhythm! I am praying with you and for you! You’ve got this, warrior mom!
