Who stands up for the poor?

“Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy.” (Proverbs 31:8–9 ESV).

What should we do when confronted with poverty? We read about that yesterday. Are there more Biblical grounds for taking action when we see injustice?

Yes, Proverbs 31 clearly indicates this. Believers are exhorted to act with dignity and justice.

God commands us to plead for the oppressed. The powerless must be given justice. Although this command is addressed to King Lemuel, it applies to everyone. Micah 6:8 also emphasises this principle of justice. It is a universal call.

God hears the loud cries of the poor and his heart is open towards them. He sees and hears their cries, and provides guidance on how to address their situation. When the people of Israel were suffering under Egyptian slavery, God heard their cries. His ears are still open. His eyes survey the whole earth.

The poor will have a representative. They will find him in you! Open your mouth. Speak up! Use all your talents to fight injustice. You don't need to be a lawyer to do that. Be there for those who have less than you. Offer help where it is needed. Care for those who are suffering. God will see it and reward you in the end.
