The Sermon on the MountSample

Blessed are those who mourn
People can mourn:
- For their own sins and shortcomings (2 Corinthians 7:9,10).
- For wickedness in the world because of sin.
Being comforted was promised to Israel through the coming of the Messiah (Luke 2:25,26). The second part of the book of Isaiah is commonly referred to as "The Book of the Consolation of Israel" (see Isaiah 40:1,2).
This was what Jesus meant when he read and remarked on Isaiah 61:1-3 in the synagogue of Nazareth (Luke 4:16-21). The final fulfillment of this promise will be in heaven (Luke 16:25; Revelation 7:16,17), but even now God can comfort us and make us instruments of comfort to others who are afflicted (2 Corinthians 1:3-7).
The Greek word translated "will be comforted" is the verb παρακαλέω (parakaleō), related to the noun used for Comforter in John 14:16,26 in reference to the Holy Spirit. Divine consolation comes through the presence of the Holy Spirit in the life of a believer. He is at their side, like a lawyer beside the defendant or a doctor beside the patient's bedside.
- Do you prefer to wallow in your affliction, or are you willing to encourage others through the comfort that God offers you through the Holy Spirit?
About this Plan

“The Sermon on the Mount” is the title often given to chapters 5-7 of the Gospel of Matthew. It is a summary of the teaching of Jesus. Although the other Gospels present some similar passages in other contexts, it is likely that Jesus actually delivered this speech on only one occasion, but then repeated the same concepts several times on other occasions as well. Matthew Henry, the great Bible commentator, says that the purpose of the Sermon on the Mount is “not to fill our heads with notions, but to guide and regulate our practice”.
