When Samuel came to Jesse’s house to anoint a new king, David wasn’t even invited to the lineup. His brothers stood tall, but David was left with the sheep. Overlooked by people, but not by God.

The oil of anointing flowed on David while he still smelled like the fields. Before he held a harp in the palace or a sling on the battlefield, he held a shepherd’s staff in obscurity. That’s where God formed him. That’s where songs were written and courage was forged.

We often want the spotlight without the solitude, the crown without the fields. But God’s pattern is consistent: He shapes kings and queens in hidden places before He reveals them in public places. Anointing begins in the ordinary. Fields are where God trains your hands for the battles you don’t yet see.

Don’t despise your field season. If you’re faithful with the sheep, God can trust you with a kingdom.
