Relationships That Flourish: A 30-Day Devotional on Finding Security in Christ and Growing Healthy Connections

DAY 20 OF 30

In today's reading, Paul starts his address to the believers at Corinth by reminding them that God is the ultimate comforter. The word "comfort" may first make us think about something gentle- something that makes us feel better instantly, like our favorite meal or a cozy blanket. However, the word Paul uses here more accurately describes "coming alongside to help" or being with us to strengthen us in our troubles. This characteristic of God—the God of all comfort—reminds us that we are never alone in the difficulties of life, and that is good news for our relationships.

We may not have grown up with great examples of healthy relationships. Even if we did, we've all experienced moments when we were hurt or disappointed by people we love. Unraveling painful experiences and redefining what is true about relationships in light of God's Word can be difficult. We can be assured that God's heart is toward us, and He is grieved by the painful things we've endured. He sees us, and even in the darkest moments of our lives, He has never left or forsaken us. It can be challenging to grasp where God is in our suffering. As we reflect on those formative moments in our journey, remember that we have a God who comforts. This comfort isn't a fleeting feeling. It's a steady promise that He comes alongside us in our pain, bringing strength, hope, and healing. As we learn to lean into His comfort, it will eventually start to overflow to those with whom we are in relationships.

Reflect: How have you experienced comfort from others in your relationships, and how has that shaped the way you extend comfort to those around you? In what ways have these experiences impacted your view of God and his intentions for relationships?

Pray: God, may Your comfort be a healing agent as I reflect on the relationships that have brought pain. May my heart be glad as I recall Your goodness in the relationships that pointed me toward You.
