Daily Encouragement

DAY 99 OF 366

“Nevertheless” is a key word in God’s vocabulary of encouragement. It appears on this dark page, which is a record of the evil reign of Jehoram, king of Judah, as a beacon of light. The prospect for “the house of David,” now sunk so low, would seem to be inevitable destruction, but then we hear God’s “Nevertheless.” God’s “Nevertheless” is heard in the face of great wickedness. Elijah the prophet actually wrote to Jehoram indicting him for following in the ways of his father-in-law Ahab, causing the people to prostitute themselves “in idol worship” and murdering his own brothers (2 Chron. 21:12-15). God’s “Nevertheless” is heard in spite of his judgement. Elijah describes that judgement in Jehoram’s case as “a heavy blow” (1 Chron. 12:14). It was indeed, and involved his people, his sons, his wives, his possessions and his own health. God’s “Nevertheless” is based on his covenant, his promises, his purpose of grace. In the hour of Jehoram’s judgement, “not a son was left to him except Ahaziah, the youngest” (2 Chron. 21:17). So despite the sins of David’s descendents, God was still true to the promises which he had made to David himself. It was to be said of the Son of God, “The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David . . . his kingdom will never end,” (Luke 1:32-33).
