Daily EncouragementSample

We listen to Paul commending his ministry, and we feel out of our depth. Yet there are principles in this paragraph (verses 3-10) to encourage us. How are we to commend ourselves as servants of God?
• In the way we endure - “in great endurance”(verses 4-5). Endurance is an essential characteristic of effective ministry. What commends a ministry is “stickability” or “hanging-in.” Presumably this was one of the reasons why Paul rejected Mark, who “had not continued with them in the work” (Acts 15:38). He was short on endurance. Such a failing discredits a ministry.
• In our walk in the Spirit - “in purity, understanding, patience and kindness, in the Holy Spirit” (verses 6-7). Nothing commends our ministry more than our daily walk in the Spirit. No aspects of his fruit are more vital than purity and truthful speech.
• In the paradoxical nature of our life and ministry - “through glory and dishonour” (verses 8-10). Paradox is the essence of Christian life and service. It is a mystery to the outsider, but an open secret to those on the inside. It is this paradox which ultimately commends a ministry.
How different are these from the criteria which men might look for! They are independent of circumstances and even of ideal relationships - witness the background of the Epistle. What an encouragement that is to persevere in the ministry we have received from the Lord!
