Daily Encouragement

DAY 222 OF 366

Jesus Christ is not the lawyer to employ if you are greedy for gain, as was discovered by the man who said, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me” (Luke 12:13). Greed for material things is based on the assumption that life does consist in the abundance of a man’s possessions. Our Lord teaches us that the exact opposite is true. The parable of the rich fool brings home this truth. We watch the tearing down of the old barns and the building of the new, bulging with grain and goods. We observe the owner settling down to enjoy his peace and plenty. But then we hear the voice in the night saying, “You fool!” It is the voice of God. The man passes on and leaves his possessions behind for others. “The real measure of our wealth,” says J. H. Jowett, “is how much we’d be worth if we lost all our money.” Don’t own anything,” says A. W. Tozer. He is warning us in an extreme way to hold our possessions lightly. In the end the issue is not how much we have, but how much confidence we put in what we have - not how much we want, but why we want it!
