Daily Encouragement

DAY 209 OF 366

These are words of great interest, if only for the fact that this is the one and only time our Lord confessed ignorance. Even he, in the voluntarily accepted limitations of his earthly life, did not know “about that day or hour.” Here is a profound warning for us not to make or accept any precise predictions about that day. “No one knows,” and no one is meant to know. This should persuade us not to place too much reliance upon any theory about the last things. That day will be greater than any theory. “What a day that will be, whenever it is!” writes G. R. Crow. “Historicists and Praeterists and Idealists and Futurists who truly love Christ; and Post-millenialists, A-millenialists, and Pre-millenialists who have trusted in the Son of God; and Post-tribulationists, Pre-tribulationsists, Mid-tribulationists, and Partial-rapturists who are cleansed and renewed by the grace of God - all caught up to live forever joyously and harmoniously together!” Nevertheless, there is no encouragement to complacency here. The very fact that we do not know the “day or hour” is reason to be watchful and on our guard, active in our “assigned task” (Mark 13:34). “Watch!” is the keyword - as servants watch for the owner of the home, as the bride watches for the bridegroom, as subjects watch for their king.
