Daily Encouragement

DAY 175 OF 366

One vital aspect of “the encouragement of the Scriptures” (Rom. 15:4) is that of fulfilled prophecy. There are few more shining examples than this. We remember this verse as we watch the holy family going up to Bethlehem from Nazareth in response to Augustus’ decree (Luke 2:1ff). Then we remember the scene in which Herod “called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law” and asked them where the Christ was to be born, in order to answer the Magi. Without hesitation these leaders replied, “In Bethlehem in Judea,” and clearly based their answer on this verse in Micah (Matt. 2:1-6). In finding solace and strength in fulfilled prophecy, we are standing on firm ground. For we are standing with our Lord and his apostles. Listen to the risen Christ addressing them: “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms” (Luke 24:44). John testifies, as he surveys Calvary, “these things happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled” (John 19:36). And Peter calls us to pay attention to “the word of the prophets . . . as to a light shining in a dark place” (2 Pet. 1:19-21).
