DAY 16 OF 20

It’s easy to compare what we have to give with what others have to give and think, Surely, this isn’t going to be enough to make a difference. That’s probably how the poor widow Jesus encountered in the Temple felt at the time. Just think about what it took for her to even walk in the door to make this offering! In the culture at that time, women had little value. As a widow, she was likely valued even less. To be brave enough to walk into the Temple surrounded by rich men who probably had plenty more to give than she could even consider offering is a feat on its own. But then, to drop all she had left in the offering and give it so open handedly to Jesus? Well, that was just above and beyond! The fear of not being enough, not having enough, not doing enough—it all could’ve held this woman back from following God’s call to generosity. But thankfully, it didn’t! And as we read Jesus’ praise of her, we can be encouraged to follow her leading and give whatever we have generously and fearlessly.

This week, read Mark 12:41-44 again. As you do, ask God to help you be as brave and open handed in your generosity as the widow Jesus praised in the pages of Scripture.

About this Plan

Open Handed

The truth is, no matter who you are, you have something to give in service to others. The problem? Those are often the things we tend to close our hands around the tightest. But what if that wasn’t the way life was meant to be lived? This devotional is going to talk about what an open-handed life really looks like, lived out—because generosity is about so much more than giving something away.
