Great I AM

DAY 1 OF 4

Fighting for Us

Maturity involves a paradox. On one hand, growing up means gaining mastery over ourselves and navigating life with wisdom. On the other hand, true maturity also means realizing that many forces in life are beyond our control. This recognition is called humility.

God’s people have always leaned into this humility. We face natural, social, and spiritual powers far greater than ourselves. Yet we also know there is One who is greater than them all.

Scripture overflows with accounts of our almighty God stepping onto the field when His people face overwhelming enemies.

Consider the Exodus: Israel, enslaved by the mightiest empire of their day, oppressed and trapped. They cried out to the God of their forefathers, and He heard them. With an outstretched arm and mighty acts of deliverance, He rescued them. God fought for them.

Later, even after Israel had entered the land of promise, the threats continued. Surrounded by nations with armies far stronger than their own, Israel humbled themselves and cried once more to the One who had delivered them from Egypt. God declared that the battle belonged to Him—for He was fighting for them.

But God’s fighting on behalf of His people wasn’t only on a national scale. In the Psalms, we hear the psalmist, crushed by enemies, sickness, and despair, cry out in desperation. And time and again, we hear the testimony: God heard his cry and delivered him. God fought for him.

All of this builds toward the climactic moment in God’s story. His good creation had been plunged into corruption, enslaved by sin and death. Humanity was powerless—both victim and contributor to the problem. Yet once again, God fought for His beloved world. In the incarnation, the Son of God died and rose for us, redeeming us into life and freedom.

The Bible paints a consistent picture of a faithful God who, again and again, fights for His people.

Reflection & Action

What battles seem impossible in your life right now? What forces feel arrayed against you? Or, if we zoom out, what overwhelming challenges confront your church, your community, or even our world?

Draw on God’s self-revelation as the Divine Warrior on behalf of His people. Begin to pray and intercede. Call on the Lord of the Angel Armies to fight once more for us.

Prayer

Almighty God, you are our deliverer. Salvation is in no one’s hands but yours. Only you have the power to save. I ask you to fight on my behalf, on our behalf. Do what only you can do to bring freedom, life, and blessing. In the name of Jesus our Savior. Amen.
