God's Optimal Health Plan for YouSample

Cravings
We are encouraged as believers to deeply desire a relationship with the Lord, comparing it to a physical craving. Psalm 42:1–2 (NIV) says, “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God.” This imagery reveals that our deepest longing should be for God’s presence, truth, and righteousness. Jesus echoed this in Matthew 5:6 (NIV), saying, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” These verses remind us that spiritual hunger leads to satisfaction that no earthly pleasure can provide. Craving God above all else helps align our desires with His will and brings lasting fulfillment.
At the same time, Scripture advises us to exercise self-control, especially when it comes to overindulgence in food. Proverbs 23:2 (NIV) warns, “Put a knife to your throat if you are given to gluttony,” and Philippians 3:19 (NIV) cautions about those “whose god is their belly.” While food is a good gift from God, it should not dominate our lives or replace our hunger for Him. Limiting unhealthy cravings not only promotes physical health but also reflects spiritual discipline. By craving God more than we crave unhealthy food, we demonstrate a heart that seeks His kingdom first (Matthew 6:33) and desires to honor Him with both body and soul.
In our practice, the most common craving we help patients overcome is the addiction to sugar. Sugar robs your body of minerals and vitamins. Once the cycle is started, it can be challenging to overcome. We have found that increasing your protein- nuts, chicken, and turkey, can help limit the craving for carbohydrates and reduce blood pressure. Ask the Lord today if there are any unhealthy cravings you may need to surrender to Him.
