DAY 6 OF 7

Workplace Relationships and Loving Your Neighbour as Yourself

In the fast pace of work—tight deadlines, demanding clients, team tensions, and endless meetings—it’s easy to forget a simple but profound truth: the people we interact with daily are our neighbours. Not just our friends or those who agree with us, but everyone—colleagues, clients, supervisors, subordinates, suppliers, and even that one teammate who tests our patience.

Jesus’ command to “love your neighbour as yourself” isn’t reserved for weekends, church gatherings, or volunteer opportunities. It’s meant for the boardroom, the studio, the project team, and even the customer service calls that start too early or run too long.

Workplace relationships can be some of the most complex and challenging. Ambition, competition, personality clashes, and unresolved conflict often get in the way. Yet the command remains: love. That doesn’t mean being passive or pretending all is well. It means choosing to see others through the eyes of Christ—acknowledging their dignity, showing grace, and treating them with patience and compassion.

Jesus placed loving your neighbour right alongside loving God. That makes it not just a suggestion, but a central expression of our faith. At work, love can look like:

  • Listening with empathy instead of rushing to defend yourself
  • Offering encouragement to someone who’s overwhelmed
  • Extending grace when mistakes are made
  • Celebrating others’ wins instead of competing out of insecurity
  • Going the extra mile to help—even when it’s not in your job description

But what about the difficult coworkers? The ones who gossip, undermine, or constantly clash with you? That’s when love becomes a true act of faith. Jesus loved even those who betrayed Him—not because they deserved it, but because He was love in action. When we love like Jesus, it’s not about who the other person is—it’s about who we are in Him.

Loving your neighbour also includes caring for yourself. If you’re burned out, bitter, or stretched thin, it’s hard to love others well. This command isn’t about people-pleasing or being a doormat. It’s about working from a place of wholeness, rooted in your identity as God’s beloved. When you are filled with His love, you’re free to pour it out without losing yourself.

A powerful way to begin each workday is to pray: “Lord, how can I love my neighbour today?” That simple question can change the atmosphere. Whether it’s an encouraging word, a silent prayer for a colleague, or a small act of kindness, these moments matter. They are the seeds of the Kingdom, planted in the soil of everyday life.

Your workplace isn’t just where you earn a living—it’s where your faith comes to life. It’s where love speaks louder than strategy, and compassion becomes your testimony. When people see love in action at work, they start to wonder about its source—and you have the joy of pointing them to Jesus.

Prayer
Lord, thank You for placing me in my workplace with purpose. Help me see every coworker and client as You see them—worthy of love, grace, and dignity. Teach me to love my neighbour as myself, even when it’s hard. Let my words and actions reflect Your heart. Use me as a light in my workplace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
