Rest in GodSample

Rest while carrying heavy burdens
Yesterday, we talked about rest from striving; how we can come to God for rest when we’re weary. Today we’re looking at the second part of Matthew 11:28–30, focusing on how we can find rest while we’re still in the midst of doing what God’s called us to do.
So what do we do if we’re feeling burdened and heavy-laden? In today’s passage, Jesus refers to a yoke – a wooden frame placed over the necks of two oxen to pull a plough together. The yoke ensured that the animals shared the load. If we’re yoked to Jesus, the load is lighter. He helps us carry it. If we let Him direct our efforts, we’re going in the same direction as He is. This makes it easier for us. Our God is gentle and humble in heart, and He cares for us. He’s not harsh with us when we’re weak – that’s when He’s strong.
God created us to be dependent. You’re tired because you need rest. That feeling of exhaustion is God’s reminder that you need Him, that you can’t do everything yourself. There are not enough hours in the day to build His kingdom and yours at the same time. So rest! As Zechariah 4:6 says, ‘“Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,” says the Lord Almighty’. It’s important to remember that God is the one who makes things happen, not us. He will help us to do all He has planned for us to do if we work in His strength, not our own.
As today’s passage says: ‘Take my yoke upon you… and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.’
