Power of the Tongue
GOD’S WORD
"Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.” – Proverbs 18:21 KJV
If you grew up in a culture of criticism or scarcity, speaking life can feel artificial at first, not because it’s false, but because your heart learned a survival language of caution over celebration, sarcasm over blessing, and silence over affirmation. Hence, encouragement lands like flattery or denial, and your mind, trained by years of critical scripts, slips down those familiar grooves. In contrast, a scarcity mantra (“there’s never enough praise, love, money, second chances”) whispers that kind words are wasteful, and shame warns, “If I hope out loud I’ll look naïve,” making life-giving speech feel like learning a language no one ever taught you.
Here’s the good news: languages can be learned, unlearned, and relearned, and Proverbs 18:21 tells the truth we often ignore, words are not neutral; they can inspire or inflame, build up or break apart, and every syllable carries consequences for the speaker as well as the hearer, “those who love it will eat its fruit,” meaning what we repeat becomes the harvest we taste; speak cynicism and you live among brambles of suspicion, speak courage and kindness and you’ll watch strength and favor grow around you. Scripture shows this at ground level: when most spies spread fear, Caleb answered, “Let us go up at once… we are well able” (Numbers 13:30), yet the fearful report shut the door on a generation (Numbers 13–14); when Moses, exasperated, struck the rock and called the people “rebels” instead of speaking as
God commanded, he felt the consequence and did not enter the land (Numbers 20:10–12); when Rahab confessed, “The LORD your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath,” and aligned her actions with her words, that confession opened a door of rescue for her household (Joshua 2; 6:22–25); and when Aaron spoke the priestly blessing, God placed His name on the people (Numbers 6:22–27), again and again, doors open or close with words.
Life-giving speech isn’t flattery or denial; it is truth with hope in the same breath: “This is hard, and we’ll face it together,” “I missed it, and I will make it right,” “You matter; here’s what I see in you,” because from the first line of Scripture, “In the beginning was the Word…” (John 1:1), we learn that words shape worlds, and I’ve heard my own voice brighten a day with a blessing or darken it with a careless complaint, so I’m asking the Lord to open the door of my lips for blessing and truth and to shut the door against words that wound; choosing words like seeds, I know I will eat their fruit, and so will the people I love.
Soul Check
- What phrase have you been repeating that drains life from you or others?
- What three-sentence blessing could you speak today over yourself or someone close?
Prayer
Lord, set life in my mouth. Open the door of my lips for blessing and truth; interrupt criticism, sarcasm, and despair. Teach me to bless, to tell the truth kindly, and to speak Your promises over my people and myself. Let the fruit be seen in time, in trust, resilience, and joy. Amen.
