Guard My Lips
GOD’S WORD
“Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips.” – Psalm 141:3 KJV
Do you notice how words sometimes sprint ahead of wisdom when life presses close? David knew that terrain. At day’s end, with pressure mounting, he prayed, “Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips” (Psalm 141). He understood words and the tongue as a threshold, and Proverbs 18:21 teaches that life and death meet at that threshold. So David invited God to stand guard there, so his speech would open the doors of blessing and peace, and not close them through compromise and harm.
I know this as well, and perhaps you do too. The email you wish had not gone out, the joke that thinned trust, the story that was not yours to tell. I have watched one sentence shut a door I had prayed would stay open or closed. David’s prayer offers more than “try harder.” He asks for Presence, a holy guard who checks identity and timing at the doorway of expression and whispers, not yet, or not like this, or This conversation needs a different room. I picture that guard standing between my first feeling and my final word. In that small, sacred pause, the wrong door closes and the right door opens.
Scripture gives vivid images of this guarded door. Isaiah knew his lips were unclean, and a coal from the altar purified his speech and opened the door to his calling (Isaiah 6:5–7). Zechariah’s lips stayed closed until his heart agreed with God’s promise; then the door of his mouth opened to blessing and praise (Luke 1:20, 64). James reminds us that a small rudder steers a great ship and that a spring should not pour bitter and fresh water together (James 3). When God keeps watch at the door of our lips, He shuts what wounds and opens a path for wisdom and life. Our words become keys that keep God’s open doors from being carelessly slammed shut.
We need that sentry most when we feel unseen, when fatigue frays patience, when relationships miss the mark, when humor tempts a shortcut, or when silence feels like losing control. In those moments, the mouth door swings too easily, and unwise speech can close doors God set before us. This psalm invites another way: post a sentinel and practice a gentle pause. I often breathe a slow prayer, 'Lord, guard,' before I answer. That breath becomes the hinge on which the right door turns. The reply that follows arrives truer, kinder, and stronger, and it protects the doors God is opening.
Guarding our lips also means guarding our inner narration, because spoken words usually echo the private script we rehearse, and those harsh inner thoughts eventually leak outward and start to shut good doors. Ask God to stand at both doors, the heart and the lips, so what grows within carries the tone of Jesus. Let it be firm where truth is needed, tender where care is called for, and hopeful as a settled habit. May He open the door to gracious speech and close the door against words that wound, so we do not willingly close the doors He has opened or force open doors He has wisely shut.
Soul Check
- Where do your words tend to race past wisdom, such as fatigue, frustration, feeling unseen, trying to be funny, or filling silence? Which door does that pattern push on?
- What simple pause, such as a breath, a whispered “Lord, guard,” or a slow count to three, can serve as your daily door sentry so that wise words keep God’s doors open?
- Which inner phrases need to be retired so your outer words become keys that open life rather than locks that close opportunity?
Prayer
Lord, set a guard over my mouth and keep watch at the door of my lips. Open my lips for blessing and truth. Slow me where I rush, steady me where I must speak hard things, and soften me where tenderness heals. Close every word and action that would shut doors You intend to keep open. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight. In Jesus’ name, amen.
