Growing Multigenerational Faith

DAY 15 OF 31

Proverbs 1:8-9 encourages a younger generation to listen to the instructions of the older generation. Older generations have matured in their faith, have walked in the experiences a younger generation is currently walking in, and can offer instruction on how to make wise choices.

The key word in Proverbs 1:8-9 is “listen”; not just to hear what someone has to say, but to think deeply about it and apply it to your own life. Proverbs 12:15, ESV says, “The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice.” Someone who is further along in their walk with God and has a consistent track record of pursuing growth in their faith is someone who holds deep wisdom. The Lord tells us in Proverbs 3:13-15 that wisdom is more precious than jewels or anything we could desire. So if you know someone who holds tested wisdom, what a precious thing to try and glean from them! Teachability to the word of God and to others is the greatest shortcut in life; rather than struggle with decisions and suffer the consequences later on, God gives us faithful people in our lives who can give Godly counsel.

The challenge then, of Proverbs 1:8-9, is to intentionally pursue time with wise counsel and ask them the hard questions that will lead to wisdom in your own choices; questions that are uncomfortable and open you up to honest advice. Questions like “Is there an area of my life where you’ve noticed my actions do not honor God?” “What do you think about the choice I’m about to make?” “What do you think is my next step in growing in my faith?” And as you listen to what they have to say, choose to apply the instruction that is given and make a change.

Questions to Consider

  • What is the question someone should ask you to help you be grounded and mature in your faith, in this season of life?
  • Who is someone you would like to have a voice in your life?

Actions to Take

  • Share with someone the question you need to be asked in your life right now and give them permission to ask it.
  • Intentionally invite another person into your life to be a voice of wisdom and guidance.

Prayer to Make

Lord Jesus Christ, Satan’s number one strategy is to isolate me from others. Put people in my life who will keep me safe and strong. And Jesus, show me who I can be in community with so they are safe and strong too. Amen.
