Tax collectors, much like today, were not very popular in the time of Jesus. Not all of them were honest. Some of them were despised. They were seen as sold-outs to the ruling power – the Romans. Their job was to collect money from everyday hard-working Jews. A good Jewish believer would never associate with the like! They were tainted by the association with their masters. Yet, it was just one of these that Jesus chose. Not because of his pedigree, but because of his need, and in doing so, Jesus demonstrates what his job on earth really means.
