30 Famous Bible Verses Explained

DAY 16 OF 30

Bible Verse 16
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 NIV

Why Is This Verse Famous?
This is probably the best-known Bible verse in the world. Why? Because it shows us how much God loves us.

A Short Explanation of the Verse
These words come from Jesus during a one-on-one conversation about how faith in God changes us. In the conversation, Jesus likens coming to faith to being “born again”—in other words, becoming a new kind of person.

We become a new kind of person when we recognize our identity as dearly loved children of God. We’re not mistakes or accidents. We were made on purpose, for a purpose. And God invites us to discover our purpose through trusting Him.

This is the “eternal life” Jesus is talking about. In Jesus’ day, eternal life wasn’t a reference to the afterlife. It was a way of talking about God’s way of life. An eternal, consistent lifestyle rooted in love. So eternal life isn’t something we’re waiting for; it’s a present reality we participate in anytime we show sacrificial care to others.

What Could This Verse Mean for You?
No matter who you are or what your story looks like, God’s love includes you. Trusting Jesus means stepping into that love and finding life that never ends.

What does it mean for Christians to be “saved”?
