Peace That Surpasses Understanding
“And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” -Philippians 4:7 (NKJV)
There’s a kind of peace that makes no logical sense. It doesn’t come from a stress-free life, a perfect situation, or a calm environment. It’s the peace of God, a peace that surpasses our ability to understand it.
This peace isn’t something we can manufacture. It’s not natural; it’s supernatural. It comes through a deep relationship with Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace.
Jesus Himself modeled this. He was constantly surrounded by pressure, accusations, death threats, betrayal, confusion, crowds, and spiritual warfare. (John 11:53, Matthew 12:24, Luke 8:46, Mark 14:43) Yet He walked in perfect peace. Why? Because He was always in communion with the Father. His peace wasn’t based on the absence of trouble or challenges; it was rooted in the presence of God.
Someone might say, "Well, yeah, Jesus is God. Of course, He lived in peace." But Jesus was fully man and fully God. He modeled what unbroken fellowship with the Father looked like as a man. (John 1:14, Colossians 2:9, Hebrews 2:17, Philippians 2:6–7)
Philippians 4:7 reminds us that when we take everything to God in prayer (v.6), His peace guards our hearts and minds. The Greek word for “will guard” is phroureó; it means “to mount guard as a sentinel (post spies at gates)”; figuratively, “to hem in, protect -- keep (with a garrison). God’s peace stands watch over your emotions and thoughts (Psalm 73:26), not letting fear, anxiety, or chaos drive your decisions and thinking.
In other words, peace isn’t a passive feeling; it’s a powerful defense.
No matter what you're facing today, you don’t have to be ruled by fear. Acknowledge the fear, but then know that Jesus overcame that fear to give you supernatural peace. Jesus was faced with fear daily during His three and a half years of public ministry, yet He abided in a supernatural peace from above that empowered Him to overcome everything the enemy threw at Him. You may not understand how peace is possible in your situation, but you don’t need to. Jesus is your peace. And when you stay close to Him, His peace will guard you even when everything else feels out of control.
Prayer: Jesus, thank You for being my peace. Help me stay close to You today and trust that Your peace will guard my heart and mind, no matter what comes my way.
About this Plan

At the Last Supper, Jesus told His disciples, “Peace I leave you, My peace I give you; not as the world gives, do I give to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled, nor fearful.” (John 14:27 - NASB). Jesus made it clear: His peace is always available to us. But how do we actually live in that peace, no matter the season? In this devotional, we’ll look at the life of Jesus and His Word to discover how to abide in His peace-filled Presence, steadfast, unshaken, and full of hope, even when life feels anything but peaceful.
