Choose JoySample

DAY 47 - YOU ARE OUR JOY
Reflection: As we finish our week reflecting on the presence of joy in the early church through the Holy Spirit, we turn to Paul's heartfelt first letter to the Thessalonian Christians.
At the start of the letter, he recalls how, in about 50AD on his second missionary journey, Paul and his companions brought the good news (gospel) of Jesus to Thessalonica:
'... because our gospel came to you not simply with words but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and deep conviction.' (1 Thessalonians 1:5 NIV)
Paul's connection with this church is not motivated by personal gain. It's the sharing of life in the richness of the Spirit's presence that creates deep relationship not dimmed by time or distance. It's a model for our own Christian relationships and reminder of the source of our strength.
In today's passage from chapter 2, Paul is renewing his love and concern for this resilient church, saying that to be apart from them was like being orphaned, and that he had tried again and again to return to them with 'intense longing', but that 'Satan blocked our way'.
It's sobering to remember there is an enemy of God's people, and even a giant of the faith like Paul can have his plans egkoptó - cut into or cut off by this adversary. We are also reminded not to give up when challenges come, as God will provide a way - Paul is able to send Timothy and his letters to renew connection with this church.
And why is Paul so passionate about the church in Thessalonica? Because along with converts to Christianity wherever he went, they are at the centre of his purpose, the reason for persecution and suffering, and ultimately the 'hope, joy and crown' that he will glory in when Christ returns.
'Is it not you?' Paul asks. 'Indeed, you are our glory and joy.'
Choose joy: Remember those who you have helped in their faith journey (or who have helped you) and reach out to them again, they are your 'glory and joy' - and they need your support. Allow the power of the gospel, the Holy Spirit, to enrich your life and relationships. And pray again for a way past the blockages Satan may try to bring.
About this Plan

Welcome to Choose Joy, a 50 day devotional encounter with joy in the Bible, as together we reflect on the joy that only God can give. Our prayer is that this joy will become a deep and abiding, Spirit-enabled source of strength in our lives, whatever we may face.
