Choose JoySample

DAY 27 - BRING JOY
Reflection: The Psalms, such as this one, remind us that we can talk to God about anything. That we can and should be emotionally honest with God. Perhaps it’s the only time you feel able to truly express what you’re feeling. And there’s no better place to start.
David, to whom this psalm is attributed, was acknowledged as a person after God’s own heart, though we also know of his many serious failings and sins. But he knew them too, which is what sets him apart from many of the kings of Israel.
We can see the richness of his personal connection to God. He knows God as a guard and saviour, forgiving and good, abounding in love and answering prayer. This ‘knowing’ comes from a readiness to call on God, all day long if required. Our lives will be different if we follow this example, even for part of the day!
But David also knows himself – sometimes knowing ourselves seems the greater mystery! He knows that he is ‘poor and needy’ – not in physical wealth but in spiritual independence. He knows there is faithfulness in his life and trust. But he also knows he is just a servant, even though his earthly role is King.
It’s interesting that David does not stop at a neutral request that God relieve his difficulties. He goes further and asks to be moved well into the positive – ‘bring joy to your servant’. Life is not neutral; there’s no emotional vacuum. David recognises he needs to live in the spiritual abundance of God to overcome the challenges he will face. And that means being strengthened by joy.
Choose joy: Follow David’s example and get real with God. You’ll not only get to know him better, but yourself as well. And ask for joy, as David does, flowing from trust.

About this Plan

Welcome to Choose Joy, a 50 day devotional encounter with joy in the Bible, as together we reflect on the joy that only God can give. Our prayer is that this joy will become a deep and abiding, Spirit-enabled source of strength in our lives, whatever we may face.
