Philippians 4:4-9

DAY 4 OF 5

Whatever Is Good

What did you consume today? I can tell a lot about a person’s state of mind by what they feed themselves. And I don’t mean physically. I mean what they ‘feed’ their emotions and spirit, through their eye and ear gates.

If the music they’re listening to, articles they’re reading, things they’re watching, songs they’re singing, or conversations they’re having, are negative, unhealthy, or straight up ungodly, it would be very difficult to have the spiritual strength and maturity to prevent this from affecting their attitude, mindset and perspective. On the flipside, if the content they’re consuming is positive, healthy and firm in ways of Christ, they’ll often have a different response. Often it will be one that is Jesus-centred, full of hope and trust in the God who created us and has a plan for us. No matter what.

Today’s verse encourages us to reflect on (and trust in) all the things that reflect the Word of God. This is what needs to happen to see Him move in our lives. When we focus on the things that are good, noble, pure, admirable, excellent and praiseworthy, they impact how we see the world. They affect how we feel about ourselves, others and God.

It’s wise to be intentional about watching, reading and listening to conversations that are good AND godly. This helps us develop our spirits and emotions to reflect the God we serve more and more.
