Overcoming OffenseSample

Offense is one of Satan's most subtle yet effective traps for believers. It comes in many forms: misunderstandings, unmet expectations, painful words, or being overlooked. However, Jesus tells us in Luke 17:1 that it is impossible to live in this world and not face offense. That means being offended is not a matter of if but when, and our job is to learn to navigate it.
The Greek word for "offense" in the New Testament is "scandalon." It refers to the bait that entices an animal to spring it shut. In other words, when we take offense, it’s like grabbing that bait. Our emotions and minds get entangled, and before we know it, we are caught in a cycle of hurt, unforgiveness, and bitterness. What seemed like a small wound becomes a stronghold.
Now, it's important to note that while we cannot always avoid being hurt, we can choose not to stay offended. When we let offense grow unchecked, it hardens our hearts, distorts our perspectives, and sabotages our calling. Offense is often rooted in pride and a desire for control. It whispers to us that we’re owed something, and control tells us we must manage how others behave. Together, these two emotions try to make offense feel justified in our hearts.
When we look at Scripture, we see that even Jesus’ disciples were offended by Him (John 6:66). In other words, if people could be offended at Christ, we should not be surprised when it happens to us. However, what matters is what we do next. Will we nurture the pain, or will we surrender it to God? Will we fall into the trap, or will we choose to grow through it?
Today's Challenge: Ask the Holy Spirit to show you if there's any offense you've been holding onto. Write it down, and begin to pray through releasing it.
Let's Pray: Lord, I don’t want to take the bait of offense. Help me to recognize when I’m slipping into bitterness or pride. Give me the strength to forgive quickly and trust You with my hurts. Soften my heart and free me from any trap that would keep me stuck.
