God’s Strengthening Word: Learning From Biblical Teachings

DAY 10 OF 30

Introduction

Luke 14:7 24: In today’s reading, Jesus teaches about humility and hospitality and the protocols relating to meals. By means of a parable about the Kingdom of God, he teaches about responding to God’s invitation to a banquet.

Today’s Key Verse: Luke 14:13–14a GNT

[Jesus said:] “When you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind; and you will be blessed, because they are not able to pay you back.”

Reflect

In verses 7–14, what is Jesus teaching about social relations and status? What lesson can be learned about humility? In verses 15–24, how does the parable build on the lesson Jesus teaches in verses 7–14? What angered the host? What excuses did the invited guests make? What is your understanding of what this parable reveals about the Kingdom of God and the consequences of not responding to God’s invitation? Compare verses 13 and 21. Who is invited?

Pray

Lord God, you invite us to your Kingdom and to feast at your banquet table. Thank you that there is room for more. May I put aside all excuses and heed your voice each day, offering you thanks and praise for your love and grace. Help me extend your invitation to all I encounter today. Amen.

Tomorrow’s Reading

Luke 15:1–10: Jesus teaches about God’s care for those who are lost.
