Day 6: Motives in the Fire

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 3:13 NIV – “Their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work.”

God doesn’t just look at what we do—He tests why we do it. Paul paints a sobering picture: one day, all of our works will pass through the fire of divine examination. Not to determine our salvation, but to reveal the quality—the motive—behind what we've built with our lives.

We might build impressive ministries, successful careers, and even do good works in God’s name. But if our foundation is pride, insecurity, competition, or people-pleasing, the fire will expose it. What was for show will burn. What was for God will remain.

This truth isn’t meant to scare us—it’s meant to purify us. God is inviting us to live intentionally and authentically, building with materials that last: faith, hope, love, obedience, and integrity. Motives rooted in Christ will endure the fire and bring eternal reward.

The beautiful thing is, God gives us the chance to evaluate ourselves now. We don’t have to wait until that day to examine our hearts. The Holy Spirit gently reveals where our motives have drifted. He invites us to return to the foundation: Jesus.

So ask yourself today: Am I building for God or for me? What am I investing my energy, time, and passion into—and why? The fire will come, but we can choose today to build with what lasts.

Prayer:
Lord, I don’t want to spend my life building something that won’t survive Your refining fire. Examine my heart, test my motives, and show me where I need to realign with You. Help me build with humility, love, and obedience so that what I do brings You glory and stands the test of time. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
