Psalm 23 is often known as a ‘funeral psalm’. While I am glad that it’s used to give comfort in the face of death, I think it’s a shame that we don’t turn to it more in life because the profound and beautiful promise that God is with us in all things, is worth remembering in every season.
This psalm carries powerful imagery. God is the shepherd and we are the sheep. When you think about yourself, and then think about God, how do you picture the relationship between the two of you? Is it Father and child? King and subject? …. and ….. ?
Do you ever think of the relationship in terms of shepherd and sheep? It might not be one we gravitate towards because being a sheep is to recognise that we don’t bring a lot to the table. Farmers will tell you that sheep are not the brightest of creatures. They aren’t self-sufficient. They can’t protect themselves. They have a terrible sense of direction. Being called a sheep is almost insulting! But, there is beauty in the insult.
To be a sheep is also to recognise that you don’t have to be impressive and able. In the complexity and crises of life, you don’t need to be self-sufficient… you just need a shepherd.
And that is precisely what we have in God.
We have a God who is a mighty King, but Psalm 23 reminds us He is also a shepherd. Notice from the psalm, God is a good shepherd: He is compassionate and gracious with the sheep. He is the best carer, provider, and protector there is. And, as the best shepherd, He never, ever leaves the sheep. He guides them through all things, even through the darkest valleys, until the day that they are safely home in His house.
Today ponder this: how do you feel about being a sheep? And what difference does it make to your life right now knowing that the Lord is your shepherd and He is with you?
