Unshaken: 7 Days to Find Peace in the Middle of AnxietySample

Rewriting the Story
Our anxiety is often fueled by the stories we tell ourselves. Stories like: I can’t handle this. I always mess things up. I need a drink to calm down.
Here’s an example from my personal life: My husband and I recently attended a birthday party of an extended family member. We both pictured a low key backyard BBQ, so we decided to bring our (super friendly) little dog. Instead, we walked in the door to find it was more formal than we anticipated. The event was catered indoors with fancy tablecloths and many people I’ve never met. The hostess and others were super kind and yet I still felt stressed and anxious. Our dog even had an accident in the first 10 minutes we were there! I felt uncertain and uncomfortable. The thoughts running through my head told me I had blown it, I’d be on my own and that the next couple of hours might be intense. With all of that going on inside of me, it felt overwhelming to stay present…but I did. I was tested when I went to the full bar where alcohol was flowing and poured myself a sparkling water. Although it takes practice, I “played the movie forward” and pictured a peaceful next morning. I’ve never regretted not drinking.
It’s crucial to remember that not all of our thoughts and beliefs are truths.
Romans tells us transformation happens by renewing our minds. Jesus reminds us that it is The Truth that sets us free. Freedom from anxious thoughts or relief from stressful situations won’t be found in toxic positivity or through striving to keep it all together with a plastered smile.
Today, name the belief. Identify the narrative in your mind and the meaning you’re giving to an experience. Challenge it. Rewrite it in light of God’s Word. You’re allowed to think new thoughts.
Prayer:
Jesus, I give You my mind. Help me break free from old beliefs and replace them with truth. Remind me that You have equipped me to handle anything through the power of the Holy Spirit. Thank you for making me resilient and strong as I grow through dependency on You.
Journal Prompt:
What anxious belief keeps replaying in your mind?
What is a better, truer narrative to replace it?
Scripture
