Jesus Meets You Here: A 3-Day Reset for Weary WomenSample

Day 2: Rooted
Jesus wants this woman to see beyond her physical thirst. He’s pointing to something deeper: the living water of the Spirit. But she doesn’t quite get it yet. “You have nothing to draw with,” she says. “...Are you greater than our father Jacob?” (John 4:11-12 NIV)
We do the same, don’t we? We look at our situations through the lens of our limitations. If something feels too hard for us, we assume it’s too hard for God. But being rooted in Christ means seeing him for who he really is - not just what we understand in the natural.
This woman’s response is still surface level: “Sir, give me this water so I won’t get thirsty.” (John 4:15 NIV) But Jesus doesn’t want to be a quick fix. He wants to root her in truth.
And so, he lovingly gets her attention: “Go, call your husband.” (John 4:16 NIV) This is a loaded statement because he knows her situation. But notice, when she reveals what he of course already knows, he doesn’t condemn her. He simply says, “You’re right.” No shame, just truth - and that truth opens a door.
The woman changes the subject, as we often do when we feel exposed. She deflects and talks about where to worship. But Jesus sees through it and speaks right to her heart, reminding her that worship isn’t about place or appearance. It’s about spirit and truth. He’s inviting her to be rooted in him, not religion, not ritual, but real relationship.
So often we want the result of God’s work without the root of it. We want the peace, but not the pruning and the blessing, but not the becoming. But he’s not just a provider of water, through what he provides through the Holy Spirit, he is the well.
The truth is, we have this living water too. The Holy Spirit dwells in us. Jesus in fact said it’s better that he left, so we could receive the Spirit (see John 16:7 NIV). That means we’re not waiting at the well anymore because he’s within us.
So the question becomes: are we rooted in that? Or are we still searching for the next thing to quench our thirst?
