Overwhelmed, but Not Alone: A 5-Day Devotional for the Weary Mom

DAY 2 OF 5

Day 2: God hears your cries.

May your first knee-jerk reaction in the face of overwhelm always be to hit your knees. You may never have the opportunity to discuss certain sensitive circumstances with others. But you can always have them with God. He may not remove the struggles in your life, but He will surely uphold you as you face them.

Some would see prayer as a last resort or a posture of defeat, but when you’re navigating many land mines in your day, prayer should be your first line of defense. In that way, prayer is an acknowledgment of your dependence upon God. It is a deliberate admission that the burdens of this world are too heavy for you to bear and a recognition that He alone upholds all of creation.

His power cannot only help you tackle the tasks at hand, but it can also bring dead things to life. It can resurrect your feelings about your home, your children, and the work he’s given you to do. Call upon God to temper your responses with gentleness and generosity of spirit. Pray that He removes any growing irritation and allows you to see the mundane liturgies of scrubbing faces, chopping veggies, or returning misplaced items to their rightful places as an opportunity for worship. Ask that you’d begin to see service within your home as sanctifying work—a holy labor that will birth a more Christ-like you.

Psalm 120:1 says, “In my distress I called to the LORD, and he answered me” (ESV). Admittedly, when you are weary, it’s difficult to drum up enough energy to even ask for help. In your overwhelm, whisper if you have to. A whisper comes with intimacy. A whisper is a shout of hope and expectancy.

God will hear your threadbare prayers and draw close to you. He will answer. He may not change your circumstances. Instead, He may change your heart about them; He may change you. But isn’t that our ultimate end as Christians, to be transformed? To look more like God’s Son today than we did yesterday? It is through prayer, through our heart cries, that we can actively acknowledge his care and lay down our worries. It is through prayer that we can relinquish control, folding our busy hands in surrender.

Every time you bring your cares and concerns to him, you say, “I don’t just trust you with my eternal life, God. I trust you with my everyday.” He will hear your distress, and He will answer.

Reflect:

1.How would you describe your prayer life during overwhelming seasons?

2.In what ways have you seen God change your heart through your prayer life?

Pray:

Lord, in the middle of my mess, I yearn for a deeper relationship with you. When I am overwhelmed and in need of help, remind me of your presence. Help me to relinquish control. I recognize my dependence on You. May I listen for Your voice and Your perfect timing in my circumstances. In the mighty name of Jesus, I pray, amen.

Meditate:

Psalm 120:1, “In my distress I called to the LORD, and he answered me” (ESV).

About this Plan

Overwhelmed, but Not Alone: A 5-Day Devotional for the Weary Mom

Moms are shape-shifters that change from being chefs to doctors to janitors to judges to teachers to plumbers to therapists to hostage negotiators and back again, all before breakfast. We play more parts than a one-man band. No wonder we feel so overwhelmed and alone. Except we’re not. God sees our struggles, hears our cries, and wants to help by redeeming whatever feels broken and bent in our lives. Jamie Erickson offers real-life encouragement for women in the thick of motherhood.
