Psalms 1-30 Book Study - TheStorySample

Who’s Got Your Back?
Life is a battle, isn’t it? We face battles every day, like terminal illness, job insecurity, financial stress, relationship breakdown.
Perhaps, like David, you too have been on the frontlines of battle. I know I have. I have faced intense spiritual warfare in my home. I have confronted the Enemy as a pastor’s wife. I have experienced the attack of church snipers. I have fought for my son’s life as he battled leukemia.
There are times when I have been desperate for help; when I, like David, prayed to be rescued out of deep waters (verses 16-19). I’ve begged God to provide an easy way out of seemingly insurmountable circumstances. If only he would remove certain people from my life. Perhaps you’ve prayed the same way.
God has often heard my cry and answered my prayers (verses 6-18). I have rejoiced when he quickly dismounted his heavenly throne, rising to my defence. But other times, he’s chosen not to rescue me from the battlefield. Rather, he’s trained me for it and strengthened me in it (verses 29-42). In either case, God’s intentions and motives are always out of love for me (verse 19).
David’s prayers were no different than yours or mine. However, he also knew personally the One who could be trusted and counted upon. He knew that whether he removed the battle or trained him for it, God had his back.
It is no different for us. God keeps us safe when we faithfully put our trust in Him (verses 20-30). Even more, he does it because he delights in us (verse 19)! He’ll do anything for us. In fact, already has. He died for us and rose victorious so that we could conquer all the battles in this life! He completely has your back. Trust Him!
Respond in Prayer
Almighty God, you are my Rock, my Fortress, my Shield, my Horn of Salvation, and my Stronghold. You alone are God! Thank you for the times when you rescue me. Thank you also for the times when you train me for battle. Thank you for delighting in me. Amen.

About this Plan

The Psalms express every emotion - joy, grief, anger, fear, hope - with honesty that gives us permission to come to God just as we are. In this 30-day plan, you’ll walk with the psalmists through trouble, betrayal, and praise. Their words remind us that God welcomes our questions and pain - and meets us with love, forgiveness, and faithfulness. As you read, may your relationship with God deepen. May your heart be renewed. And may praise rise, even in the storm.
