Paul and Silas’ second missionary journey marked the first time that the message of Jesus spread to the Greek world. Certain Christian teachings, like resurrection, were foreign concepts to Greek culture, and it led to some confusion as to their hopeful future with King Jesus. As you just read in Acts 17, Paul’s time in Thessalonica was cut short due to persecution, and he was not able to finish instructing these new Christians. He worried about this church of only new Christians. After sending Timothy back to them and receiving his report upon his return, he responds with the letter of 1 Thessalonians to bring both encouragement and correction. Note that this video covers the background of both 1 & 2 Thessalonians.
