Paul, along with Silas and Luke, planted the Philippian church way back on his second missionary journey (Acts 16:11-40). In the time since, the Philippian church was a consistent supporter of Paul and his work, and a source of great encouragement. This letter is written around the time that Acts left off, with Paul in prison in Rome awaiting his trial. The Philippians once again sent Paul support, and Paul now is expressing his gratitude, while also encouraging them to not succumb to the pride that is so prevalent in their culture.
