Slaying Giants Before They GrowSample

The Birth of a Giant
Theme: It All Begins Small
The story of David and Goliath is legendary. A young shepherd, armed only with a sling and unwavering faith, defeats a towering enemy trained for war. It's a powerful tale of courage, faith, and divine intervention. But there is a subtle truth that rarely gets attention: Goliath was once a baby.
He wasn’t born a giant, he grew into one.
This thought is more than a clever observation—it is a spiritual alarm. It reminds us that giants don’t just crash into our lives unannounced. They are nurtured, cultivated, and tolerated until they become unmanageable.
The giants in your life—those looming struggles of sin, shame, addiction, or pride—rarely appear full-grown. More often, they begin in seed form:
- A small compromise.
- A half-truth.
- A silent grudge.
- An seemingly innocent indulgence.
- A single click.
- A word spoken in anger.
- Delayed obedience.
At first, they appear harmless—perhaps even harmless curiosities. But the vineyard of your life is not destroyed by wolves; it is ruined by little foxes—small things that sneak in unnoticed and eventually ravage what God intended to bloom.
A curiosity becomes a fascination.
A fascination becomes a habit.
A habit becomes bondage.
And bondage, if left unchecked, becomes a giant.
And one day you look up and ask, “How did this happen? How did I get here?” It didn’t happen overnight. Goliath grew up in the shadows while no one was watching.
This is why Solomon urges us to “catch the little foxes”—not because they are dangerous now, but because they will be if left unchecked. A small root can break a mighty wall. A flicker can consume a forest. A whisper can become a stronghold.
So today, ask yourself with honesty and humility: What baby giants am I nurturing? Because if you don't confront them while they’re small, they’ll confront you when they’re big.
Reflection Questions:
- Is there a “baby giant” in your life that you've been excusing or minimising?
- What small liberties have become recurring patterns?
- What would it look like to “catch the little foxes” today, before they ruin what God is growing?
Prayer:
Father, I confess that I often overlook the small things; dismiss them, and even excuse them. You know that small seeds can produce towering giants if left alone. Today, please give me the courage to confront what seems minor before it becomes a big problem. Help me to be vigilant with my thoughts, my habits, my words, and my time. I do not want to nurture what will one day seek to destroy me. Instead, plant in me the seeds of righteousness, purity, and self-control. Let Your Spirit illuminate the hidden places and help me catch the foxes before they ruin the vineyard of my soul.In the name of Jesus, Amen.
