Cutting Off the Toxic
The Bible doesn’t just tell us what to do (prescriptive); it also shows us what happens when people ignore God’s commands (descriptive). The story of Solomon and the Israelites is a lesson in what happens when we let toxic culture into our lives.
Solomon’s story is a cautionary tale for us today. When we compromise with culture, it leads us away from God and damages our spiritual health.
What’s in Your Life That Needs to Go?
What’s stopping you from standing firm in your faith?
Is it the shows you binge on Netflix?
Is it the music you listen to?
Is it the social media influencers you follow?
These might seem small, but they add up. Just like the Israelites, letting even a little of the world’s culture into your heart can lead you away from God.
"Many of the people of Israel have not kept themselves separate from the other peoples living in the land… So the holy race has become polluted by these mixed marriages."
Drastic Action
After the Israelites returned from exile, they had to take drastic steps to purify their faith. They confessed their sins, wept before God, and cut off the toxic relationships that had led them astray.
"We have been unfaithful to our God… But in spite of this, there is hope for Israel. Let us now make a covenant with our God to divorce our pagan wives and to send them away."
This might sound extreme, but it shows how serious they were about returning to God. If you want to protect your faith, you need to be just as serious about cutting off the things that pull you away from Him.
It’s Not Too Late
No matter how far you’ve gone, there’s hope. God’s promise is still available to you. But you need to take action.
Break up with the toxic relationship you have with culture.
Say NO to the things that are poisoning your faith.
Say YES to standing firm in God’s truth.
God’s truth is your anchor. Hold onto it. Stand firm. And don’t let culture pull you away from the God who loves you and calls you His own
